Senior Mechanical Engineer

Otter Products is looking for a Sr. Mechanical Engineer to join our team. This role is preferred to be based in San Diego, CA or Fort Collins, CO with the ability to work remotely a few days a week.


As a Sr. Mechanical Engineer, you will contribute to engineering and product development initiatives to achieve company objectives and goals. This position mentors department engineers and works cross-functionally to identify design needs as well as provide design solutions and recommendations, often with a focus in how to design and engineer more sustainably. . The Sr. Mechanical Engineer exercises independent judgement in utilizing existing and emerging technologies to lead, manage, design and build new products and series, contributing to sales growth through successful development and launch of new products.

In this role, this person will serve as champion and team subject matter expert on design for sustainability, circularity, and design integration of recycled materials on core products. They will find & propose business-prudent sustainability opportunities within Engineering, facilitate & lead related programs, and coach peers & cross-functional partners on sustainability-related opportunities.

  • Responsible for all stages of product, development, including design review, prototyping, testing, verification and validation which may include leading, participating in, coordinating or supporting these activities 
  • Work cross functionally to ensure the successful definition and development of the products
  • Ensure that new product designs are innovative, premium solutions to meet all internal, customer, regulatory requirements in the time frame allowed to meet time-to-market goals, keeping stakeholders updated at regular intervals
  • Progress from ambiguity (e.g., a rough sketch) to solidified concept without the need for supervision, utilizing lite touch management, giving guidance and direction for the ideation sprints and providing feedback in design reviews, then direct subsequent iterations toward concept refinement
  • Responsible for the proficient creation and release of Product Requirements Documentation, Design Specifications and applicable standards and procedures
  • Support the development of manufacturing processes, including attending pilot runs and plant trials when necessary to assist in the ramp of manufacturing capabilities with partners, to ensure the product meets specifications (involvement will continue until the manufacturing process is stable)
  • Support the development and execution of test plans and, where needed, tools, fixtures and specifications
  • Plan and estimate engineering development tasks including design cycle, prototype fabrication, testing/validation and project documentation
  • Prepare for and often lead design reviews for most projects. Utilize results of reviews to improve part quality, cost, manufacturability and time-to-market
  • Solicit feedback from quality, tooling and manufacturing engineers, applying proper design for manufacturability, moldability, assembly, and more
  • Work with internal and external parties to build and test prototypes/engineering samples
  • Trouble-shoot root cause failure analysis and formulate corrective action plans
  • Propose feasible alternatives with sufficient detail to select design direction from among options. Select best option and propose direction to the technical team
  • Guide and coach less experienced engineers to improve part quality, cost, manufacturability and time-to-market
  • Improve existing standards and products to meet quality, cost, and time-to-market goals
  • Support and maintain a positive safety culture by following all safety policies and procedures and actively contributing to a safe working environment
  • Other duties as required


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required. Degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred
  • Minimum of six years mechanical engineering design experience required, including four year of SolidWorks experience preferred
  • Experience with injection molding and plastic part design preferred
  • Experience with and passion for Design for Sustainability, circularity, and/or recycled materials preferred

USD $88,800.00/Yr.

For US Based Roles Only - Compensation Range Maximum

USD $120,000.00/Yr.
